Genetic testing - also known as; gene testing and DNA tests, is a complex laboratory process in which the examination of an individual's DNA takes place. So what is DNA? Well, DNA makes up genes. Genes are information holders if you will, which directly determine the characteristics such as height and color of the individual's eye. Genetic testing detects the 'presence', 'absence' or 'alteration' of a certain gene, chromosome or protein through a variety of laboratory procedures. It also enables a person to find out if they are likely or less likely to inherit a disease from their parents or family. Some tests can discover if an unborn baby may have a genetic disorder.
